A comparison of XP, Vista, MacOS and Linux

After working on some projects on Leopard and Linux. I think I'm in a fair position to make a comparison between those OS giants, namely Windows XP, Vista, MacOS(Leopard) and Linux(Ubuntu).

For me, Windows XP is long dead. Vista offers a variety of functionality. Admittedly, some of these features are not very easy to use, but once you do, you won't be able to live without them. (*1)

Yes, I know. A lot of Mac fanatics will argue that those features are stolen from MacOS. Like this guy:

But I don't care about that. Even if vista do steal, it steals good. Some features are even better than the original. For example, the spotlight of Mac can only highlight the top level elements of the control panel. But vista search can uncover things deeper inside and filter out those unrelated.

    Untitled-1

Just several years ago, it's ironic that you can use a search engine to find almost anything on the web but not a picture of yourself on your own computer. But almost in one night, Google Desktop and Picasa changed all that. They even freed you from the chore of arranging your documents and pictures. Obviously, Microsoft is furious about these two products. And he pursued a very 'logic' step - bundling them with Vista, like bundling IE against Netscape more than 10 years ago. I love Picasa, but I'm a little too lazy to download it when I have Window Gallery readily installed.

    Untitled-1

My first impression of Leopard is that it's full of animation. It's fun to have your windows flying around. It's much better than Alt+Tab in XP or Win+Tab in Vista. And the animations and effects are not merely showing-offs. They have deep suggestive meaning. For example, in mozilia browser, the search keyword will pop off the ground and shake a little, so you will notice them. After developing with iPhone SDK, I find the NeXTStep framework is rooted in animation. It's very easy to programming(Despite the awkward Objective-C Grammar). So Windows will not be able to catch up easily without a total startover.

But what I dislike about Leopard is that it's mainly designed for the mouse. But I prefer keyboard and shortcuts. And the windowing system lacks the advance docking functionality of Visual Studio 2008 or Photoshop MX. So when it comes to a very complex program, the interface layout is a bit messy. Is it a patent problem? If it is, who are you people then, to reason with the unreasonable, to be honest with the dishonest.

I've been long wondering what's the good about Linux. How something so hard to use are so fond of by so many? But now I finally start to understand. First, all the academy guys use Linux. It can open your eyes and let you experiment with all those cut-edge things in the academy world. Second, I'm born in the age of Dos. It feels cool to be able to use the command line to do all those thing efficiently. Third, there are tremendous of command line utility programs to use. You can pipe the inputs and outputs to make the potential endlessly. Fourth, most of the programs are open source, so if you find a bug or you want to tweak it to suit your unique taste, you can do it. Fifth, it's more secure. Seventh, it uses less memory. ...

But wait! Have you noticed? All of its strength are also its weakness. A common user will never care about these things. All he care about it to be able to watch a video or browse the web, without any annoying problem. But even my newly install Ubuntu 8.10, the ground breaking first easy-to-use Linux, still need a lot of tweaking. One day, I encountered a video/audio unsync problem, and searched the forum. Someone said, it's a feature to have video/audio unsynced! You should create a configure file to and add 'framedrop=yes' to change the default behavior! How on earth would someone understand that!

(*1): Some of my pet features in Vista:

       * The new start menu has a search box. If you want to run a program, you won't need use your mouse to click open a series of folders in start menu. You can simply input the initials of the program. For example, if you input 'cal', 'calculator' and 'windows calendar' will appear. You can use the arrow keys to select one of them. It's very handy when you have a lot of programs installed.

       * The control panel have a search box too. If I want to remove a program, I will press the Win key, input 'control', 'control panel' will appear, and press enter. Now Control Panel window opens, the focus is in the search box. I will continually input 'remove'. All unrelated setting utilities will be filtered out, 'add or remove programs' appears right on the top.

       * The Photo Gallery allows you to add tags to photos. So you won't need to arrange your photos into a lot of folders. The next time, if you want to find the photo of your pet dog, you can input his name.

       * Similarly, you won't need to arrange your documents. Throw all of them in the Documents folder. And use the search function to uncover them in a second. It's like googling on your own hard drive.

       * You can edit permission for each folder or file. So multiple users share the same computer can have some degree of privacy.

A taste of hard disk encryption

After using Microsoft Live Mesh, my concern about disk failure is greatly reduced. But another problem looms over the horizon.

I have 2 PCs and one laptop synchronized with each other, all of which containing critical data. What if I lost my laptop? Or someone just open the case and peek into the hard drive? All the confidential documents and valuable code will be in others hands.

So I decided to add some encryption mechanism. And the following paragraphs are about my annoying experience with Microsoft Bitlocker and my penchant for TrueCrypt.

    [Microsoft Bitlocker]

First, I tried Microsoft's Bitlocker on a legacy laptop running Windows Vista.

Bitlocker take advantage of the TPM chip on the computer. And encrypt the whole partition. But this laptop has no TPM. After some googling, I found out that, in the absence of TPM, you can use a USB drive to store the key file. The only problem is that every time you want to boot up your PC, you will have to insert that USB drive.

Another thing is that a encrypted partition can't be used to boot up. So you need to create another 1.5G boot partition. And vista ultimate edition even offers a utility to do it. Generally, it does the following things.

    1. Shrink my C: partition, leave some free space behind.
    2. Create a 1.5G bytes partition S: out of the spaces just freed.
    3. Install boot loader and boot manager on S:
    4. Make S: as active partition.

So the next time you restart your computer, it should boot from the new partition S: and load Vista on C:. At least things should have worked out that way. But my computer just refused to reboot. It says "missing operating system".

I startup the command console using the vista installation DVD. And use bcdedit.exe and diskpart.exe to inspect on the drive or modify some boot configuration. But nothing works. So finally I give up and use diskpart.exe to mark the original partition as active. Now Vista is properly booting again. But I still can't get Bitlocker work.

    [TrueCrypt]

Microsoft sucks! I need something else. And I'm very excited to tell you, I found something exceeding expectation! Something so delicate and beautiful. Every detail seems perfect. It's www.truecrypt.org

From the point view of a user, its main features are:

    1. Virtual disk encryption. First, you need create a virtual disk with a password. A virtual disk is essentially a very large file. Then you can mount it to a drive letter and use it just like a ordinary hard disk. But every time you mount a virtual disk, you will be asked for the password. According to my test, the virtual disk is blazingly fast, the slow down is barely noticeable. This is the eaiest way to setup and has no potential risk of any kind.

    2. Non-system partition encryption. That is, any partition without a booting OS. After encryption, Windows will still see the drive letter. But if you try to use it, Windows will tell you it's not formatted. So you'd better use Windows disk management program to remove the original drive letter. Then you can use TrueCrypt to mount the "hidden" partition to another drive letter. It will be usable then.

    3. System partition encryption. This is the coolest part! In method 1 and 2, you will have to manually mount a drive. It's very inconvenient in some circumstances. For example, it will not be possible to start a SVN server on a virtual disk at boot up time. But if you encrypt the system partition, every time you boot your computer, it will ask you for a password. If the password is correct, then the Windows will start to boot. Everything is normal from then on, you will not even fell the existence of the encryption.

    4. Hidden partition. Although technically, the encryption is invulnerable. What if someone with a gun asks you for the password? Will you be able to refuse? This software has taken that into account. It will create a hidden partition within a encrypted partition. So if you input password A, you will enter an ordinary disk which contains some appearingly important documents. But in fact they are not. But if you input password B, you will enter the real important disk.

From a technician's point of view:

    1. By default, it uses 256bit AES encryption. For the foreseeable future, it can't be cracked. And it offers a lot of other algorithms too.

    2. A tremendous amount of details are taken into account to make this software. For example, it will use your mouse movement to generate real random numbers.

    3. The hidden disk thing is genius! It's technically impossible to tell whether there is a hidden disk without a password. It just hides within the random bytes of the unused free space of the first partition.

    4. It's very robust. I tried to mess with the virtual disk file, change some bytes here, delete some bytes there. And when mounting it again, TrueCrypt tells me that the disk header is broken, I can choose either to use a backup one hidden some where else in the file or to use a recovery disk with the backup header. After restoring the header and successfully mount the drive, I found that some of the files in the drive are still good. So it's possible to recovery a failed disk just like an ordinary disk.

    5. It's very user friendly. The text of the disk creating wizard is very clear and meaty. It will explain the consequence of each choice option. And it's very cautious about each step. For example, after telling me to create a recovery CD, it will wait for me to put the CD in the tray and verify it. (I use a virtual CD to fool it). Before rebooting, it tells me to print out a snippet containing some emergency procedures in case it doesn't boot.

    6. It waste you no time waiting for the disk to be encrypted. The encryption is done in the background, and it can be paused and resume at any time. It will even resume after a power off.

    7. It will carefully make sure your previous unencrypted data are erased. Using some advanced techniques such as magnetic force microscopy or magnetic force scanning, it's possible to recover the data that has been overwritten. So before encrypting a sector, it offers you a choice to write some random bytes into it, and overwrite it with some meaningful data, and some other random bytes again, and so on and so on... Only after that, it will write the encrypted data into that sector.

So join me and encrypt you laptop now.
